5 Lightning Lane tips we've learned

WDW Prep School

Hello there -

We've just returned from Disney World where we spent a day in each park using the new Lightning Lane system.

In general, we found the system easy to use, and we were able to visit a lot of attractions without long waits.

We do think that Lightning Lane capacity is being throttled right now. For example, we had zero wait for things like Tiana's Bayou Adventure and Slinky Dog Dash.

While we don't expect a long wait when using a Lightning Lane, it was obvious there wasn't a lot of them being offered which is likely due to them testing the new system during a relatively slow time of year.

We expect them to continue to tweak the system as we approach some busier travel times this fall.

Here are 5 tips we've learned about Lightning Lanes:

  • Lightning Lane times can overlap. When pre-booking your Lighting Lanes, you'll select the attractions you want, and Disney will propose times for each attraction. The times they suggest will not overlap, but you can modify them so they do overlap.
  • If you have a split stay, you'll be able to book for your whole trip. We weren't sure if Lightning Lane booking dates for split stays would be similar to dining reservations where you have multiple dates when you can book dining reservations. With Lightning Lanes, you're able to book for your whole trip all at once, so it does not work like dining reservations.
  • More Lightning Lanes can be booked once you tap into your first pre-booked Lightning Lane. This includes booking in another park. Let's say you're starting your day in Animal Kingdom and want to hop to EPCOT. If your pre-booked Lightning Lanes are at Animal Kingdom, you'll be able to book for EPCOT once you tap into your first Animal Kingdom LL. You can also modify the rest of your AK LLs to be EPCOT LLs after tapping into your first one.
  • Single Pass Lightning Lane refunds can be requested in My Disney Experience. As often happens, Rise of the Resistance went down and never came back up during our park time. Instead of heading to a blue umbrella for help, we were able to get a refund right in the in-app chat.
  • Book your most difficult Lightning Lane day first. Since pre-booking is 1 day at a time, book your most difficult day first. This is similar to dining reservations where we suggest booking in order of difficulty and not chronological order.

Whew! That's a lot, so feel free to hit reply if you have any questions.

And be sure to snag our graphics to help you know which attractions to book when.

QUICK TIP OF THE DAY

Before you reach your 60-day mark for Advanced Dining Reservations, make sure that your credit card info is up-to-date. Having to re-enter your credit card info can slow you down when trying to make difficult reservations.

Want to submit your own quick tip? Hit reply and we may feature it in a future email.

That's it for now! Have a fantastic weekend.
